For some time now the East Village has suffered from a certain imbalance — plenty of places to dine and drink, but nowhere to stay. It’s a situation that’s found some resolution in recent years, as a building boom in Manhattan’s south-eastern quadrant has made space for a new wave of modern boutique hotels, some of them, like the newly christened Standard, East Village, situated in gleaming modern high-rises.
It’s hard to miss the towering curves and angles of the Standard, surrounded as it is by a relatively low-rise district. And from inside the rooms it makes for unique perspectives on the East Village rooftops as well as the downtown bridges and classic uptown skyscrapers. Windows are floor-to-ceiling, and the in-room amenities are pure luxury-boutique: iPod stereos, Blu-ray DVD players, mosaic-tile bathrooms and three different bathrobes to choose from. All this and warmth too — the modern furnishings are set off against charmingly retro wood paneling and bookshelves stocked with handsome leather volumes.
The other half of a New York boutique-hotel package is the nightlife — though this, it’s been said, will be a somewhat more restrained affair than the to-the-wall excess of its cousin in the Meatpacking District. The restaurant/bar is a fine start, an indoor-outdoor venue that somehow feels both like a well-kept secret and like a part of the neighborhood. And the location places you within striking distance of most of the best of lower Manhattan — check out one of the Standard’s loaner bikes and see for yourself.
Please note: From September 17th, 2012 through late summer 2013, The Standard, East Village will be reconfiguring its ground floor and working on a new restaurant. Public space on the ground floor will be limited. The hotel will be offering a complimentary continental breakfast for all guests in the Penthouse on the 21st floor, which offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. Additionally, 24-hour room service will be available. After breakfast service, the hotel's 2nd floor sitting room (mezzanine) and terrace will be available for use as a living room and will be serving a select menu and cocktails from 11:00 AM to midnight.

What the hotel could do better:
The service wasn't fantastic, it was just OK. Not what I expected from The Standard. The beds were great but the overall details in the room were just OK, for example the bathrooms were basic. The staff (other than the porters) weren't overly friendly, meaning they didn't go out of their way to cater great service. They were very reserved. There were a couple of requests I had to make more than once, even after e-mailing the manager.
