André Balazs’s line of Standard hotels took its time getting to New York. Now it seems they were waiting for something big, and this is it — for a group that’s made its name with clever renovations, a ground-up new build is a major undertaking.
The Standard looks more or less like a slightly bent UN building on stilts, straddling the High Line, the elevated former railway that’s been turned into lower Manhattan’s new green paradise. Even the interiors feel a bit utopian, decked out in a retro-future style that pays homage to Scandinavian mid-century modernism — a welcome departure from the faux-Romantic grittiness that seems to prevail in the Meatpacking District.
Bedrooms are compact, this being Manhattan, but they’re made bigger by clever planning and expansive views — New Jersey, in particular, looks good from this angle. The bathrooms are raising eyebrows for their transparent lack of privacy, but this place is for lovers, not room-sharing businessmen or pairs of traveling missionaries.

What I liked:
The floor to ceiling windows. The view. The comfortable bed. The fantastic bathroom with big bath and powerful shower. The location.
What the hotel could do better:
The hotel should have made it more clear before booking that the club on the top floor is not open to hotel guests, yet hotel guests can hear it from their rooms until 3am (even 3 floors lower than it). Also that hotel guests have to share lifts and lobby with people using the club. The website is miss leading using the club to promote the hotel.
The room service do not clean the bath on a daily basis and do not replenish the bath foam despite a 5 night stay. The amount of towels left in the room is not consistent.

What I liked:
Location where everything is happening. Right around the hotel, there are interesting bars, good restaurants and trendy people. Loved the open showers.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing major, had a wonderful stay! Rooms are small and pricey compare to other Standard hotel in East Village. And, lobby of the hotel can get super crowded easily on Friday and Saturday nights for the club/bar upstair.
