No, they haven't gone and turned the original Taj Mahal into a hotel — but this place is so impressive that it would be easy to forget about its namesake altogether. Conventional wisdom holds that this is the finest hotel in India, the equal of any luxury hotel in New York or Paris, and given Indian architecture's flair for the dramatic, it is no surprise that from the outside, this hotel could pass for at least the ninth or tenth wonder of the world.

But that's actually the back of the hotel you are seeing from the harbor — legend has it that the architect drew up the plans from abroad, and didn't visit the site until construction had been completed. Supposedly as his boat approached, he saw that the hotel had been built the wrong way around, and was so frustrated that he threw himself overboard.

Whether or not this is true, there are benefits to the odd layout; the “back” of the hotel is all guest rooms, with no grand entrance taking up space, and more rooms thus overlook the harbor — and what may have been intended as a driveway and entrance is instead the swimming pool and courtyard, while the actual entrance is a discreet, out-of-the-way affair.

Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is a bustling and chaotic city, home to (among others) the film industry, and is, like much of India, a study in contrasts, from the opulence of the Taj Mahal hotel to the noise and pollution of the city streets. The better rooms have magnificent ocean views, while the lesser look down on Mumbai's dilapidated rooftops — still a stunning panorama, if not exactly postcard-worthy. The somewhat newer Tower Wing, though still luxurious, is a bit antiseptic compared to the Heritage Wing, dating back to 1903, where this hotel's history was written, its guestbook comprising a Who's Who of travelers to (and within) India for the last hundred years.

There are no fewer than five restaurants and three bars, as well as every in-house convenience imaginable — but to stay in would be criminal. Mumbai's nightlife is legendary, and even the most jaded traveler can find something worth seeing in this extraordinary city, whether the vast Victoria gardens or just a game of cricket.

Michael Deane

Taj Palace

By Michael Deane based in East Molesey

Stayed March 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

Outstanding staff. Staff in 5 star hotels seem to oscillate between superior and disinterested to overdone fawning. Every single member of staff I encountered was just superb. Polite, efficient and not over-bearing. I was here for business but will return with my family as I think this is a fantastic oasis from which to explore Mumbai

I Disliked

Although located in a prestigious area of the city, being at the southern most point of Mumbai means a very long airport transfer and getting anywhere other than South Mumbai was a real drag. This is not a fault of the hotel but if you are planning to explore teh areas to teh north you may wish to consider teh Takj Lands End - about an hour to the North

The service was extraordinary and the hotel was luxurious. Everything seems to have returned to normal after the 26/11 attacks (which are acknowledged in a tasteful memorial).

I Disliked

The service, which was extraordinary, could be intrusive at times.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

It's our party

Tablet Inc. reserves the right to remove any hotel review or travel recommendation at its sole discretion, for violation of the above guidelines or for any other reasons.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
