The Tides Zihuatanejo
Playa La Ropa S/N
Zihuatanejo, Mexico
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Lively
70 Rooms
The old Villa del Sol, a Zihuatanejo beachfront classic since 1978, is now the Tides Zihuatanejo — it’s owned by Kor, the same group that owns the Tides in Miami Beach as well as a number of LA-area boutique hotels. New ownership hasn’t changed the essential appeal of the place one bit; it’s still right on Mexico’s longest beach, the suites are still spacious and private as ever, and the service is still tireless and efficient.
In fact you could really just call it a polish. The interiors have been updated a bit, but the rooms are all still individually designed, each with a balcony or a terrace. Those right on the beach, naturally, are the prize ones, but there’s not a bad room anywhere. Suites come with private infinity-edge plunge pools, and the other rooms make do with the resort’s three pools (and the Pacific, of course).
One unqualified improvement is the newly expanded spa, complete with yoga studio and a fitness studio in a sunny palapa surrounded by greenery. A word for families (and those determined to avoid them): while there’s no outright prohibition on children, the Tides is an adult-oriented resort — high-maintenance kids would be better served elsewhere.
How to get there:
The Tides Zihuatanejo is approximately a 15-20 minute drive from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport.

Excellent service. The manager came up to us our first evening and asked how everything was and I mentioned great other than I was surprised there was not a magnified mirror in the suite. Within 5 minutes, someone knocked on our door with a mirror! SERVICE!

What the hotel could do better
on a scale of 1-10, customer service was 8. I often go to Las ventanas in los cabos, and they have customer service down to a tee, they score an 11.

I've been to many great hotels, but this one definitely hits my top 3 list. I'm a designer and can be a bit compulsive about details. This hotel's impressive details, have me booking my next flight back. The food is excellent, even if you're a foodie. The service is attentive and friendly. The design is simple, elegant, and tasteful. I had the feeling that every experience I had there was planned out to the T. Room details, service ideas (they bring you ipods on the beach and clean your sunglasses), drinks of the day, fresh fruit options to flavor every order of water, flower petal designs when you return to your room, cozy beds, and great bathrooms. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
What the hotel could do better
The hotel tends to draw couples, honeymooners, and some families. Fortunately the families mostly had older children, or the ones with young children utilized the on site nannies. If you're looking for a party hotel, you might have to bring your own friends. Oh, one more point, make sure to confirm if you are on a meal plan or not, can be a bit confusing. In any case, I'm going back!!

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
