The old Villa del Sol, a Zihuatanejo beachfront classic since 1978, is now the Viceroy Zihuatanejo. New ownership hasn’t changed the essential appeal of the place one bit; it’s still right on Mexico’s longest beach, the suites are still spacious and private as ever, and the service is still tireless and efficient.
In fact you could really just call it a polish. The interiors have been updated a bit, but the rooms are all still individually designed, each with a balcony or a terrace. Those right on the beach, naturally, are the prize ones, but there’s not a bad room anywhere. Suites come with private infinity-edge plunge pools, and the other rooms make do with the resort’s three pools (and the Pacific, of course).
One unqualified improvement is the spa, complete with yoga studio and a fitness studio in a sunny palapa surrounded by greenery. For some off-premise exercise, the hotel can arrange any number of activities on (or in) the water, from surfing to diving to deep sea fishing, all virtually out the back door.
How to get there:
The Viceroy Zihuatanejo is approximately a 15-20 minute drive from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport.

What I liked:
All the small things which make a hotel excellent were there: for me the memorable things are: coffee and croissant in front of the door before wake up, beautiful decor, mainly white, loved the flower arrangements the housekeeping staff arranged on the pillow; plunge pool and the # of pools, which were small and secluded; lap pool and large baby pool, in the back, very friendly service, great beach, particularly the fact that it was private but still allowed for general traffic in front, so there was "entertainment in watching the beach strolling; palapas which give excellent shade, very comfortable beach loungers with headrests, and last but not least the cleanliness of the hotel in all areas! I have been to a lot of beach hotels and found the washrooms at pool and beachside excellent (can be an issue at times even in the best of places).
What the hotel could do better:
I had a wonderful stay! One thing I found surprising is the room rate quoted in US dollars by the Hotel, then converted to Pesos at changing exchange rates on the bill. Somewhat confusing.

What I liked:
We have stayed here before 3 years ago. we fell in love with the place. It is a like a little slice of heaven. The setting is beautiful and the rooms are just so perfect . The hot tub overlooking the ocean and the outside shower and bath that are still very private all add to the ambiance. It is a couples paradise, though I could see no reson why kids could not enjoy it. The service as always was over the top.
What the hotel could do better:
We did feel as though there had been a little negligence of the facility compared to 3 years ago. Some the buidings need rethatching.
I also think that a little more attention to ridding some of spaces of red ants would be good. We still a wonderful stay!
