They’re calling it the Golden Cage, this distinctive, warm-toned, metal-clad modern building on Weinmeisterstraße in Berlin Mitte. The bit about the cage is meant to be ironic, we think, as the Weinmeister is very much the sort of place you’re supposed to want to be confined in. It’s so hard to tell sometimes, when it comes to German culture. But in fact this little joke turns out to be an encouraging sign — while many of Berlin’s design hotels are either severely avant-garde or goofily whimsical, the Weinmeister mixes both in a rich, complex cocktail.

Monochrome predominates in the interiors, with accents in muted, earthy tones, but the details, added together, inject a sense of fun into the proceedings. All the hard-edged modernity is softened by rich woods and soft felt, and the oversized wingback chairs of the common spaces are echoed by the wingback bed pods that stand at the center of the bedrooms. There’s a spa to keep everyone looking and feeling good, as well as a restaurant offering round-the-clock room service.

The location, it must be said, is absolutely ideal for this sort of thing — Berlin Mitte is thriving, full of the youthful revelers that a hotel like the Weinmeister depends upon. It all comes together in the Schwarz Bar, which is named either for the German actress Jessica Schwarz, a frequent visitor, or for the Schwarz liqueur that her family brews especially for the hotel. Or both. Again, it’s so hard to tell sometimes — but this is a hotel for anyone who’d rather be slightly perplexed than bored.
