Thompson Ocean Drive

Miami’s classic Hotel Victor is keeping its neon signs — in the historic district of Miami Beach, branding decisions are permanent — and the elevated courtyard pool is still one of Ocean Drive’s most remarkable outdoor spaces. But some changes are afoot, now that it’s the Thompson Ocean Drive: look for a quiet but thorough renovation to be completed in late 2012. Then again the Victor, as it is, seems a natural fit for the Thompson philosophy: chic, luxe rooms, swanky and inviting public spaces, and plenty of attention paid to the food and beverage offerings.
The interiors come courtesy of the French designer Jacques Garcia, who made his reputation with his arresting work in several of Paris’s top boutique hotels. The lobby, done in shades of purple and green, features clusters of velvety couches, gracefully separated by diaphanous curtains suspended from the ceiling.
Guest rooms are split between the original 1936 building and a contemporary addition — only the latter, it should be noted, come with balconies. Still, all are nearly over-the-top in their lavishness: each contains a full bar (not mini), 300-thread-count sheets, and a flat-screen television with DVD player. And among the Victor’s other charms are a 6,000-square-foot underground spa, the expansive Spa V, the Garcia-designed Bar V, and an outpost of Bice, the globetrotting Milanese restaurant group.
