Travelers to Milan need not choose between grand old palaces and boring business hotels. The third option is this quiet, discreet little townhouse hotel, in a peaceful residental neighborhood, seemingly a world away from the bustle and grime of Italy's industrial center (though in reality just ten minutes' walk from downtown).
The building is a small and unassuming one, a restored nineteenth-century residence. “Townhouse” is an apt name — guests are likely to be seen socializing in the courtyard or over the communal breakfast table, and the owners' constant presence (they live next door) makes for a sort of house guest atmosphere.
Rooms are understated, in sedate colors, and comfortable, with soothingly Oriental furniture and the obligatory marble bathrooms (and, if you are fortunate, a terrace). There are no design heroics here — though fashion and design professionals make up Townhouse 31's clientele, they seem to have somewhat conservative tastes when it comes to lodging. Presumably, after a long day spent buying and selling cutting-edge aesthetics, they are looking for little more than a quiet place to sit.
There is no restaurant, only the breakfast service, and the courtyard is the bar, so chances are you will have to venture outside the building at some point. Milan, of course, suffers from no shortage of nightclubs and outstanding restaurants — and anyway, if you want to be pampered, taken in by an all-encompassing hotel experience, there are those imposing palazzos, and those beige business hotels. Townhouse 31 is for the slightly more independent traveler, for the non-conformist in all of us.

What I liked:
We felt the location was a very convenient walk to all we wanted to do.
The staff was unbelievably helpful, attentive and friendly.
The room was a good size and layout. The patios, I imagine, could be fantastique in spring and summer, however, it rained for 6 days while we were there.
What the hotel could do better:
Time for new carpet in the stairwells and fresh paint. Fresh paint in the common areas would make a huge difference.
