South Beach may be the new capital of American cool, but all the celebrity-spotting comes at a steep price — rooms in this most in-demand of holiday destinations can set you back several hundred dollars a night.

Enter the Townhouse, where prices aren't as absurdly low as they were in the first months after opening, but still quite a bit more accessible than some of the hottest of the hot spots. And this one succeeds where others have failed — some shabby-chic hotels come off a bit more shabby than chic, but the Townhouse (rather like the Standard) makes the most of its budget constraints.

The design is heavy on white, in the prevailing boutique style, but with bold dashes of red to break up the monotony, avoiding the art-gallery pretension of the typical monochrome hotel room. Beach balls and funky furniture, as well as functional touches like self-service laundry machines, mean the atmosphere is more stylish beach house than boutique hotel.

The location is prime real estate, at 20th and Collins, a short walk from the beach — a spot that's anything but bargain-basement. The shops and cafés of Lincoln Road are a short stroll away, and bicycles are available for rental. But the focus as ever in South Beach is on the social life, and to that end the Townhouse features Bond Street, the Miami outpost of the hip New York eatery, and the rooftop lounge is unique, a fixture of many a photo shoot or product launch, furnished with waterbeds alongside the typical sofas and benches. Don't get too comfortable, though; South Beach is covered in bars and restaurants, and you'll want to get out a bit — especially at night.

    Location and atmosphere were great.

What the hotel could do better

The fact that I had to wait until the last day to secure a late check out.

The location is good and it seems to be a good option for younger travelers with a budget who don't mind the sparse rooms and the hostel like feel

What the hotel could do better

It felt like a hostel, the rooms felt dirty, there were spots on the couch and on the walls and everything just felt old and run down. Even though the hotel is trying to have the hip look and feel to it, it felt cheap and nasty. I can see this working for younger travelers who don't have a lot of expectations from a hotel but if you are a frequent traveler and are used to a certain standard, don't stay here! No towel for the bathroom floors, spots on the walls, worn out furniture, spots on the floor, etc. All of this made me not want to sleep in the room, which is why I checked out the same night (I couldn't get a refund since it was a rate that had to be canceled 3 days before) and stayed somewhere else. This felt more like a motel standard than a nice hotel. Would not go back there...

Airy hotel, decent sized rooms, great staff that were really helpful with recommendations for places to eat that were both local hang-outs and fine dining. They know their town.

What the hotel could do better

The room has an UGLY view from the back corner into garbage and air-conditioning units that were noisy when sleeping.

The rooms were spaciously and charming.

What the hotel could do better

The hotel was very noisy. The view both from window and roof terrasse were bad (air-condition and building sites). The bath room was getting a bit long in the tooth.

great style and great service - at least in the common areas.

What the hotel could do better

The rooms were nice, but don't look too closely and see the shabby bits. I've been in adjoining rooms in other hotels, but here it sounds like the people next door are right in your room. Not fun when you are already asleep and they are just coming in at 3 am from partying.

Overall, the place was fine however some of the bed was soiled in a way I won't describe which left the overall impression to be somewhat disgusted.

I am just going to comment on a couple of things that I really liked at townhouse and it was different: We had an ipod stand and speakers in our room that was great. The breakfast was selfservice and I love that, the common areas were so inviting. I would go there again and I wished that we could have stayed longer.

The complimentary breakfast in the mornings is delicious and must not be missed, especially after a long night in Miami. The rooms were sufficient, given that this hotel is more of a stylish affordable hotel with the right location.

What the hotel could do better

The hotel is on the beach, but you must still walk through a parking lot to get there.
