The Sofitel Metropole is a generic five star hotel, faultless in its standard luxury but utterly banal in its facelessness. We could have been staying in any five star hotel in any part of the world, so we chose to stay somewhere that felt like we were in Hanoi instead.

Overall the Sofitel Metropole was a fantastic hotel; however, it needs to improve how taxis are procured for guests by perhaps dealing only with a few reputable companies rather than calling in any taxis from the street. We had several unfortunate incidents where the taxis called from the hotel demanded 10 times the normal fare for a relatively short ride to the Old Quarters. We had stayed at another very small hotel in the Old Quarters and they dealt with only 1 reputable taxi company, and we were never overcharged. The Metropole should not be associated with deceptive & greedy taxi drivers!

The overall quality of the rooms that placed a lot of focus on the details such as sheets, bathroom products, extra little treats such as truffles waiting for us when we arrived, two bottles of complimentary water, etc. Breakfast was also exceptionally good. I liked the fact they only had a simple offering (croissant, cereal, juices, yogurt, etc.), but everything on offer was outstanding including the coffee which surprisingly wasn't the case at other hotels in Vietnam of the same class.

The old wing of the hotel was very charming, and the staff were happy to show us a range of available rooms upon arrival.Atmosphere in the hotel's many facilities varied, but we enjoyed an excellent dinner on the sidewalk Terrace of the Beaulieu restaurant.Location was perfect for first-time travel to Hanoi, and in close proximity to a broad mix of galleries and restaurants.

Good position, all the charm of an old hotel. A very nice mix of French and Vietnamese qualities. Outstanding food.

We had a chance to stay in both wings - loved them each. Such different character, but so great, even though so different from each other. The staff was extremely helpful. The location was fantastic for wandering and shopping.Breakfast was INCREDIBLE
