Local Khmer food served in an authentic Khmer house.
Sugar Palm came very highly recommended, but turned out to be a disappointing experience.I get restless when I have to wait for my food for more than 30 minutes, and that's exactly what happened. Being a lone traveller made it a little more unpleasant when I had to sit all by myself waiting. The beverage and starter came quite promptly though. But that didn't help because after I fininshed my starter, I had to wait a good 20-25 minutes for the main course. At one point before the main course arrived, I even paced around my table looking for an eye-contact with a waiter so that I could find out what was up with my food.I looked around and saw that three other tables were also getting restless waiting for either their food or their bills. The egg parcel and the bowl of Khmer traditional soup were my main course, and they were supposed to be served together as I was later informed by one of the owners. But the soup came before the egg parcel, and so I was halfway done with my rice when the egg parcel was served. All was well as I was trying to carry on with my meal, and at the same time fighting the urge to make a scene, until I bit into a small chunk of salt. The unexpected burst of saltiness in my mouth made me choke slightly. As luck would have it, I was also done with my beverage at that point.More than half the egg parcel was left untouched, and the same with the bowl of soup, when the lady owner showed up out of no where with my bill. I looked around and saw that some people are now staring at what transpired at my table. At the same time, these people were still waiting for their service. I must have asked for my bill before they did, or did I?Lesson learned - be ready for a slow service at Sugar Palm.
Hands down the best Khmer food in Siem Reap. The pomelo salad, the fish with ginger, and the fish amok are simply perfect. We tried a few Khmer places that were recommended by various guides and we did not encounter the quality and execution at Sugar Palm anywhere else. The atmosphere is also great, as it is on the upper level of of old house on a quiet street.
Must have the fish amok.
Tried Viroth, FCC, Abacus, and The Sugar Palm. The Sugar Palm has the best food, nice ambience also if you don't mind people starting to smoke their cigarettes around you.
