“The Mercado has great lively night atmosphere where you can hop from one vendor to another getting little bites of great food. Get a glass of wine and carry it around as you peruse.”

“Just off Plaza Mayor is this beautiful glass and iron building filled with many delicious tapas stands, fresh seafood, jamon iberico and many other little surprises that might just be intimidating enough to keep away the flocks of tourists eventhough it is at there doorstep.”

“There are stands of treats such as oysters, shellfish and lots more of seafood (there's fruit, cheese and other stuff as well) It's a vivid place here you can have you cava and the food. No places to sit down and nobody cares about it. Great atmosphere.”

“Absolutely charming market in the heart of old Madrid. Terrific for both a morning nosh or a pre-dinner glass of wine. Or both! Not inexpensive (there are plenty of more traditional markets for that, such as the nearby Mercado de la Cebada where I actually buy my groceries) but trendy with a terrific representation of the wonderful foods of Spain. Frequented by both tourists and locals alike. The legendary Horno La Santiaguesa has a counter there, but I prefer the original bakery down the street on Calle Mayor. The little bocadillos de jamón are a terrific way to taste some of the best ham in Spain without emptying your wallet. Wonderfully crunchy spanish baguette at its finest with a drizzle of rich olive oil and a salty slice of cured ham. Or, just get a little plate of mixed olives, a glass of whatever the daily wine special is at the wine bar, and relax! Beware of panhandlers outside aiming for wealthy tourists at the mercado and the plaza across the way.”

“Next to Plaza Mayor, great small, beautiful market where you can eat and experience all kinds of local and international food at very good prices. I highly recommend the fresh Burratta sold at the left end of the market, next to the seafood, it's a a very small spot, don't miss it!!! Oh and Senens' tortilla also!!!”
