Wonderful experience in this very knowledgeable little shop in Marrakech. First, you are struck by the beauty of the surroundings ... shelves upon shelves of all kinds of indigenous spices, herbs, pigments, ingredients .. even animal fur and flesh (so be careful where you gaze, if you are squeamish.) I had entered the shop feeling a little overwhelmed and a bit over-sensitized and head-achy. The Herbalist started explaining some spice mixtures, culinary and medicinal uses, and would pass around very large jars containing said preparations. Within 3 samples, it all felt too much for me ... I moved to the back of the room ,near the door, and started declining to sniff the passed jars as they came my way. The Herbalist asked what was wrong, and promptly understood the issue (he not only spoke English, but understood the subtleties of American English more than anyone I came across in Morocco.) The most wonderful experience ensued ... I was offered a special sinus clearing preparation that when breathed through the nose opened up sinus passages that haven't been open in years. I was then surprised with a rose water shower (right there in the room) and a scalp massage. By the end of those pleasantries, I admit my headache was totally gone, and my whole well-being was vastly approved. All of this pampering was followed by (again unexpected) back massage, which was performed expertly and with proper form. They handed out handmade mood-changing color lipsticks on the way out and all of this ... all that was asked up us in return was 10 dh. About $1.20. All in all, worth 10, 20, 30 x the price in my opinion. If they were in the US, no matter the drive, I would frequent this shop. As it is, it is one of the reasons I plan to return to Maroc. An ABSOLUTE must stop in Marrakech!
