Madeleine is like a diamond in the rough located on the relatively unattractive strip of 23rd street amongst banks, best buys and storefronts CPAs. It's quite unpretentious so you have to keep an eye out for it but once inside it's a no-nonsense French patisserie. Good espresso at decent prices, incredible almond (w/ or w/o chocolate) croissants, and a very good brioche. Apple tartin and chocolate croissants round out the menu. They also have traditional macaroons - shelves of them - and although the filling was a bit heavy (at least compared to La Duree in Paris), still quite delicious. All items made on the premises and they serve lunch as well. Very Bohemian dining area in the back where you can recline on a couch or a communal table. Highly recommended if you are in that part of town.

This is a very cozy place for afternoon tea, with arguably the best French macarons in New York City. In my opinion, they are on a par with Laduree in Paris. The tea is very good, and served in a large cup, but it's really the wooden tables and comfortable sofas, and the macarons that are the main draw.
