Not just a library, the New York Public Library has art exhibitions and book readings frequently.

The New York Public Library is a New York institution not to be missed. The Rose Reading room is simply gorgeous, and there is always an interesting exhibit going on, ranging from poetry to art work. And, you can always just laze around on the steps outside for some great people watching.
