If you want to avoid the crowds in the surface, go down into the underworld of Paris. A fantastic exploration of the city's past and a very romantic walk - in a strictly 19th Century sense of the word: Powerful emotions as the fact of human mortality or death. The inevitable condition of human beings that inspired romantic poets from John Keats to William Blake and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Or, being in Paris, Baudelaire, Nerval or Verlaine.
