As the beating heart of the Indian capital’s financial district, Nariman Point has been the Manhattan of Mumbai for quite some time. However, when it comes to pricey real estate, Nariman Point makes even the Big Apple look reasonable. If you take a moment to consider the value of a 550-room tower like the Trident, its reputation as one of Mumbai’s top hotels makes a lot of sense. Like its sister property, the famous Oberoi, the Trident banks on impeccable service to keep its exacting clientele returning again and again.

Add that to the unobstructed view of the Arabian Sea and the legendary Marine Drive promenade and you’ve got a solid offering indeed. This view, coupled with the luxe spaciousness of the guest rooms, provides a peaceful escape from the frenetic rush of the city. The décor is tasteful, with an emphasis on hardwood and a general aversion to the ostentatious and the eye-popping. At the larger end, the aesthetic is a bit more conservative, and seems to be inspired by hushed, upscale drawing rooms.

In the hermetic luxury of the Trident, any cheekiness is reserved for the restaurants. The memorably named India Jones serves a range of cuisines from southeast Asia, while Frangipani does Mediterranean and wood-fired pizzas. The bar is called the Opium Den, though its intoxicating offerings begin and end with alcohol, which is probably for the best. The Trident might be most convenient for business travelers, but its luxe comforts — don’t miss the sun-deck swimming pool — place it squarely among the ranks of the best crowd-pleasing high-end hotels.
