UNA Hotel Bologna

Bologna, Italy

In the not-so-distant past, stylish contemporary hotel design was the hallmark of the independent hotel, or the maverick mini-chain, à la Schrager, for example. Today, though, it’s getting more and more difficult to guess a hotel’s business model by its décor.
This one is modern, to be sure, all bright colors and futuristic materials, with a design by Marco Piva, featuring fashion-forward furniture by B&B Italia and a focus on lighting, whether natural or fiber-optic. Oversized windows built into the building’s metallic skin expose the interiors to generous amounts of sunlight, and the hotel’s great hall is visible from the street, a welcoming gesture quite at odds with the mazelike atmosphere of the traditional hotel.
The Una hotels comprise a small chain, about a dozen all across Italy’s major and minor cities, a chain that has whole-heartedly embraced modern design. And that, in itself, is something—the feeling that there’s an animating intelligence behind the environment you’re in. Checking in may not inspire the feeling of directly communing with Philippe Starck’s artistic soul, for example, but it’s several times more inspiring than checking into a committee-designed business hotel.
The location is convenient, if not exactly central; placed directly across from Bologna’s central train terminal, it’s nothing if not accessible. The site is on the outside edge of Bologna’s central district, with walking access to everything you’re likely in Bologna to see—the historic district, the shops, the youth-oriented nightlife and most importantly the restaurants. Not as stylish as Milan, or as culturally rich as Rome or Florence, Bologna is nevertheless a strong contender on both counts, and quite possibly the gourmand’s first choice, as there are few places you can eat as well and as cheaply as in Bologna.
