UNA Hotel Malpensa
Via Turati
Cerro Maggiore, Italy
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet
160 Rooms
One could be forgiven for sensing something boastful about the new UNA hotel, out in the countryside near Milan’s less convenient airport. Intentional or not, the message is clear: Milan is a city so fashionable that even its airport hotels are stylish enough to knock most towns’ city-center boutiques into a cocked hat.
The airport hotel, of course, is the most dismal of all hotel genres, most often a purely functional box of a place, competing on price alone and hewing as closely as possible to the mean in terms of plan and décor. With that in mind, what’s remarkable about the UNA Malpensa is its sheer overkill — it could be half the hotel it is, and still stand head and shoulders above its sorry competitors.
This mid-rise building’s brash metallic facade looks alternately like a crashing wave or perhaps the sail of a great ship, leaning into the wind, a style more likely associated with a high-profile corporate headquarters than a corporate hotel. Inside it’s equally brash, a mélange of architectural styles, some elements bold and futurist, others mid-century utilitarian.
Upstairs the bedrooms are closer to modern minimalism, livened with patterned headboards and printed carpets. There’s no shortage of space — one natural strength of the airport hotel — and everything the modern business traveler needs is close at hand, from internet access and satellite TV to meeting and fitness facilities, as well as a more-stylish-than-necessary bar and restaurant. All in all it’s not as virtuosic as the impeccably designed hotels of Milan proper, but it’s far above the norm for Malpensa.
How to get there:
Una Hotel Malpensa is approximately a 20 minute drive from Malpensa International Airport. The hotel offers complimentary airport transfers to Executive room guests and transfers to their Classic and Superior room guests for approximately 29 Euro one way. Transfers to the airport are only available from 6:30 to 8:30 in the morning. Transfers from the airport are only available from 19:00 to 21:00. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
