Milan, Italy

As the design-hotel phenomenon marches on, its benefits begin to trickle downward — the kind of avant-garde sophistication that was once the purview of the most exclusive boutiques is now becoming more and more widespread. A decade ago a mid-priced chain like UNA might have played it safe, but not today.
Now the concept of affordable design is a proven one, and the UNA hotels are free to spread their distinct brand of utopian modernism all across Italy, even, in the Tocq’s case, standing proudly in Milan alongside some of the world’s most fashionable boutiques.
Of course we’re talking about Italian design here, which even at its most minimalist and utilitarian shows a deep strain of luxe decadence. Think travertine where you’d expect concrete, soft sunny colors where you’d expect stark white, and furnishings that, though clean-lined, are no stranger to creature comforts.
A nearby fitness center offers its gym and indoor pool, and the Tocq has its own airy lobby bar and a shaded terrace restaurant — though neither is strictly necessary: in the neighborhood around Corso Como are some of Milan’s best restaurants and nightspots. There are hotels in town making bolder design statements, perhaps; but in the UNA’s price range, nothing comes close.
