Though a long way from Babylon, the Ubud Hanging Gardens might just be worthy of sharing a name with one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Consider the situation: a half hour outside of Ubud, Bali’s inland attraction, it clings to the edge of the densely forested valley, a situation so precipitous that guests ride a funicular from the reception to the villas.
The accommodations are fairly conservative in style, but packed with all the luxe trimmings, including, crucially, private plunge pools. What counts here is not the interior design but the exterior view — you won’t miss designer furniture when you’re taking in the view across the valley.
Perhaps the best place from which to take in the view, however, may be the infinity pool — backed with the right view it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, and this one certainly makes the most of its situation, each of its two levels coming to a point that feels suspended out above the valley. Add yoga, a spa, and a well-trained chef overseeing two Indonesian restaurants, and there’s very little that can go wrong — Ubud may be an open secret, but the Hanging Gardens are far enough from town to feel very comfortably secluded.

What I liked:
The design, architecture and overall attention to detail in the landscaping, location, placement of all features was exquisite.
What the hotel could do better:
Overall, the service was not nearly 5*. The staff were untrained, unflexible and often were untruthful about what we could get. For example, when lunch was stopping to be served (the schedule said 3, but they insisted it was 2, even after our very long trip to the hotel. Staff were untruthful because they were untrained, as those familiar with travel in Southeast Asia will know: "Yes" doesnt mean "Yes" it means "Go Away". But one would expect far more from a Tablet hotel. Also, staff were unflexible, promised us things they couldn't actually deliver like late checkout time, and whether we would be able to use the facilities. In these cases, the truth is better.
The food was very ordinary by Bali standards and much more so when judged by 5X restaurant standards. The bills from the restaurant were incorrect, we didnt bother correcting it after they got it wrong twice, too much of a bother.
The manger of the hotel did not circulate amongst the guest and check in with everyone, rather he stayed chatting to a single table or French tourists. Ok, he may have been more familiar with French than with German or English, but again, his behaviour was not reflective of 5* hotel mgmt.
Lastly, the lift or funicular was broken and not working during most of our stay. Given the amount of stairs, this is a real problem.
The shame is, the hotel could be so much more, because the design, rooms and locations cannot be matched....such a shame.
