It's amazing what you can do with a desert. Not content with Bugsy Siegel's original dream of one city in the sand, the new generation of Vegas entrepreneurs is building several. First it was Paris. And now, from the ashes of the Rat Pack's former haunt, the Sands Hotel, rises Venice, complete with Clock Tower, Bridge of Sighs, and St. Mark's Square.

The Venetian really looks like Venice, only smaller, and minus the smell. After all, 1.5 billion dollars and the services of two historians went into its construction. The concrete is specially weathered to look four hundred years old and the canal water is an authentic shade of green. Paintings by Titian and Tintoretto have been painstakingly replicated and the frescoes and statues in the Doge Palace (where the reception is housed) are uncannily authentic, as are the gondoliers (really from Venice) in gondolas (replicated in 3/4 size) singing arias underneath a painted blue sky.

With all this, who cares that many of the shops along the canal are straight from a suburban shopping mall (think Bebe and costume jewelry)? Or that Wolfgang Puck's Postrio, Emeril Lagasse's Delmonico, and Andre Soltner's Lutece are mere franchises? The Venetian rooms are enough of a reason to stay — every one of the 3,036 rooms is a suite with sunken living room, two queen beds, and, a first in Vegas, mini-bar.

And while the decor isn't exactly cutting-edge, it is extremely comfortable. The Venetian is connected to the Las Vegas Convention Center — so, besides tourists, it's designed for business travelers looking for a comfortable place to spend the night. Stressed-out execs can also retreat to the in-house Canyon Ranch spa. But whether you're there for the conferences or the casinos, you can't leave the Venetian without taking a gondola ride. You'll have to book well in advance, and you'll pay through the nose, but it's too kitsch and too delightfully Vegas-Venice to pass up.

How to get there:

Venetian is 6 miles from McCarran International Airport. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
