Viceroy Santa Monica
1819 Ocean Avenue
Santa Monica, CA, USA
Neighborhood: Santa Monica
Style: Cutting-Edge
Atmosphere: Lively
170 Rooms
The green glow through translucent glass is the only clue that there’s anything out of the ordinary going on behind the discreet (and unsigned) facade of this seaside hotel. Inside, though, it’s something else entirely — the Viceroy is one of Santa Monica’s hottest spots, and the interiors are as chic as can be, a contemporary update of a century-old British country style, where clean-lined modern monochrome meets bright kelly-green antique-style furnishings, with printed wallpaper in vivid colors and ornate china where you least expect it — hanging on the walls.
Too often visual sophistication comes at the expense of real quality, but the Viceroy holds up this end as well: guest rooms come complete with fine Italian linens and down duvets on the beds, Thymes products in the baths, and 27-inch flat-screen televisions. Rooms come with balconies, and though only half are oriented toward the Pacific, the view more than justifies the added expense.
Downstairs the Cameo Bar connects the lobby to the pool deck, and guests in search of some privacy sip cocktails in the poolside cabanas. Whist, the restaurant, serves a fine California-French cuisine. The beach is a short walk away but most visitors will likely find themselves headed toward the shops, bars and restaurants on the Third Street Promenade.

We were greeted with a glass of champagne upon arrival and the staff were more than helpful throughout our entire stay. The rooms were large and the bed was hard to leave in the mornings! The location is fantastic and we were on the beach in less that two minutes. The dimmed lighting throughout the hotel may annoy some people, however I loved it! Great design, great food and overall a great hotel. I would go back in a heart beat!
What the hotel could do better
My one and only complaint is that you have to pay for wireless and at $10 or so a day it quickly adds up!

They have service down. They really know how to make you feel like a celeb even if you aren't. The rooms are spacious without being huge but are really well put together. The bar is great and the bartenders really know how to put a cocktail together. It works, It's a bit of a scene and you come here knowing that especially on Friday and Saturday evenings - but you know, this is Santa Monica, LA baby, and there's something of the smug factor when returning home from dinner and you can get through the rope and others can't.
What the hotel could do better
The pools were a little on the small side and come on - a bit more light in the corridors - but hey, I was wearing shades because they are compulsory here.

Great design and layout. Beautiful views from room.
What the hotel could do better
Check in staff was less than pleasant. Smug and unaffected works only for models. It's a shame because the hotel is great otherwise. Probably will choose not to stay there again.

The location is 10 out of 10. Right by the beach in Santa Monica.
The decor was very cool and the design of the rooms was terrific.
The restaurant and bar downstairs were ultra hip and the food/drinks were terrific.
What the hotel could do better
The noise coming from the bar downstairs and the pool area was incredibly loud. Staying at this hotel was quite literally like trying to catch a good nights sleep at the bar in your favourite night club!
Moreover, the room adjacent to mine was hosting their own party which included (by my count) approximately 20 people. Despite two calls to security - they were not told to keep it down.
Hence, my review of this hotel on the Table Site could be summed up as follows.
Awesome decor, great rooms. But the hotel is more concerned about selling alcohol to young hipsters than they are about providing a good night sleep to their guests who are paying over US$400 a night to stay there...

What the hotel could do better
wifi was broken for the first two days and they kept me waiting twice for a repairman who never showed. they made up for the rest of their outstanding service.

Review
Pre-Christmas was a quiet time for Viceroy. As a result, I believe we received possibly more attentive service -- especially by the restaurant staff. Food was fantastic. The beds were extremely comforting. We had a quintessential California beach vista from our room... what a great way to start our two-week stint in California. We started off on the right note.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
