The scenic old town of Guanajuato is noted mainly for having been an old mining town (back when mining towns were picturesque) as well as the birthplace of the painter Diego Rivera. So it’s a little bit unexpected to find that it’s got a hotel of the quality of the Villa Maria Cristina — a fine, intimate little luxury hotel, in a gorgeous old building with piles of character.
Villa Maria Cristina’s thirteen suites are as well-equipped as those in any big-city hotel, with furniture by Roche-Bobois, marble bathrooms with whirlpool tubs or steam baths, Bang & Olufsen stereos and even free wireless internet access. Impressive under any conditions, but for a hotel with no real competition, practically unheard-of.
Add to all that a Roman-style spa, complete with columns, vaulted ceiling and mosaic tile, and even a fitness center. The Villa Maria Cristina’s restaurant is a high-class affair as well, serving a refined Mexican cuisine along with a top-shelf selection of tequilas.
What’s perhaps most impressive about the Villa Maria Cristina is that in market terms, there’s no real pressing need for a hotel of its caliber. And yet here it is, all the same.
Please note: Villa Maria Cristina Boutique Hotel can only accommodate guests over the age of 18.

What I liked:
Beautiful hotel with great sevice. As the hotel only has 13 rooms we received very attentive service.
What the hotel could do better:
The beds in some of the rooms are only twin size which makes it a little cozy. The smallest beds should at leat be a Queen size bed.

What I liked:
-Rooms and common spaces are stylishly decorated, comfortable and immaculately clean. Well laid out, with outlets in the right places, lots of light switches and dimmers, air conditioner that worked well and quietly, iPod docking station, and room safe. Bed was big, soft and comfortable, with nice linens and pillows. It was very much like the Four Seasons, but more charming, intimate and cheaper.
-Bathrooms were modern and thoughtfully stocked with plush towels, slippers and bathrobes. I needed a razor, and behold, there was a shaving kit in the bathroom, as well as a toothbrush and toothpaste, L'Occitane toiletries, and an excellent, full-sized blow-dryer with diffuser, not some underpowered mini blower mounted to the wall.
-Setting was beautiful and serene with a terrific view - far enough from the center to be away from the noise and crowds, but close enough to walk (20 minutes) or take a taxi (5 minutes and 30 pesos).
-Service was very good - front desk staff went out of their way to accommodate our requests (found us a bottle of excellent tequila on a day when no alcohol was sold in the town and brought it to our room with a nice lime, ice and glasses set-up; offered to open the kitchen to cook us something to eat when we came back hungry from a wedding we attended; ordered Domino's pizza for delivery to our room).
What the hotel could do better:
-Restaurant service was slower and less attentive than I would have expected from such a nice hotel. We only ate at the restaurant for breakfasts because based on the reviews we read online, it sounded like it would be an expensive disappointment. The restaurant was totally deserted on all 3 nights of our stay - in fact one evening it was closed much earlier than the stated time of 10 pm, probably due to the fact that there were no customers
-Toiletries were not restocked daily - we used the bath salts on the first day and they were never replaced for the rest of our stay.

What I liked:
Only 13, all suites rooms. All large, stylish, immaculate with all the little extras you'd expect (slippers, chocolates, water, useful books, robes, stylish toiletries, superb bed linen).
Beautiful courtyard and upper balconies and terraces so you've different locations to choose for a drink, sunbathe, supper. Lovely jacuzzi and sun loungers.
Everything looked new and fresh, no tatty edges, very clean. Good, strong massages at the spa.
2 min walk (out and right) to a little bakery/cafe/ art gallery if you fancy breakfast elsewhere.
We also arrange a private cooking course at nearby Hotel Las Acacias which i'd highly recommend - fun, easy, interactive, useful, great chef. Also another good place for breakfast.
What the hotel could do better:
Really nothing. FYI for those who want to be right in the centre of Guanajuato - this hotel is just slightly outside but in a stunning area lined with beautiful Jacaranda trees or a super cheap 30peso taxi away.
The head chef had just left when we arrived but we still have a stunning breakfast and good/ average international style evening meal.
