Vivanta by Taj - President

Taj enthusiasts will be happy to know that the Vivanta sub-brand is more notable for its similarities with the Taj flagships than for its differences. The Vivanta by Taj - President occupies a modern tower in central Mumbai’s Colaba district, rather than a historic waterfront structure like the Taj Mahal Palace, across town. But beyond accidents of location and necessities of construction, this Taj shares what’s arguably essential to all of the group’s hotels.

This, in a nutshell, means attentive service, posh comforts, and an elaborate hierarchy of ever-increasing luxury, roughly correlated with the room’s elevation above street level. The look throughout is contemporary, but still quite far from modern; only the most dedicated traditionalist would mistake this for an out-and-out design hotel. If anything it’s a relatively restrained backdrop that puts the clientele in the foreground — this is one of Mumbai’s “it” hotels, the sort of place where being seen is, if not the whole point, certainly a part of the experience.

Keep an eye on the crowd by the pool, at Wink, the bar, or in one of the four restaurants — or hide yourself away in the spa for a day of intensive rejuvenation. While business hotels sprout on the city’s periphery, Colaba is to be preferred, for mixing business with pleasure.
