“Legendary” might be a bit much, when you’re talking about hotels, but Fiji’s Wakaya Club & Spa is one of those places for which the ordinary bag of adjectives feels in some way insufficient. The combination of a dazzling natural setting, a shocking amount of physical luxury and a celebrity-heavy clientele does rather tend to disable one’s critical urges. But the fact is, if you find yourself in this end of the travel market — that would be the top end, if you’re still wondering — then you won’t find much opportunity for criticism in the first place.

Wakaya occupies a private island owned by one David Gilmour; not the Pink Floyd guitarist but the bottled-water magnate whose Fiji water is arguably more well-traveled than you are. At their most basic the bures are, as they say, palatial, spanning some 1,650 square feet and up, all tucked away into tropical gardens, with massive baths, open-air rock-garden showers and air conditioning for when the ceiling fan’s just not enough. Meanwhile an enormous hilltop villa serves as something like a presidential suite, though it’s conceivable that even a president, upon checking in, might wonder to him- or herself if it’s not possible to have too much space.

Point being, it’s nice work, if you can get it. Just about everything’s included, as it should be in a place like Wakaya, from chilled Taittinger champagne upon arrival to food, drinks, golf, water sports including diving, you name it — everything but air transfers to and from the island, spa treatments, fishing trips and dive certification.
