Though it’s actually a bit more polished than its sister in Kui Buri, this one, the second resort in the X2 micro-chain brings a much-needed change of pace to Koh Samui. It’s a destination that’s been slightly over-civilized, to put it gently — the X2 approach, with its unfinished-looking surfaces of stone, wood and concrete, makes this island feel slightly wild again.

The location surely doesn’t hurt. Here, on the south side of the island, you’re as far as you can get from the tourist center at Chaweng, and the atmosphere is exceedingly calm, for Koh Samui. It’s not exactly white-glove luxury, but neither is it in any way rough — any hotel where the majority of accommodations come with plunge pools is decidedly a high-end one, however unpretentious.

And if it’s not exactly Robinson Crusoe—our copy of Defoe is at home but we’re fairly sure it never mentions spa treatments—at least it allows you to appreciate the raw charms of Koh Samui, minus some of the more unsavory elements. These beaches, these still waters — this is one of the world’s most supremely pleasant places, and we’ll take any chance we can get to recapture some small taste of its original, unspoiled charm.
