Boston needs to grow young, in the same way many of us need to grow up. Somber, red bricked, brown stoned, the keystone of New England dignity — it's almost as though the Puritans are still in residence. Enter XV Beacon (pronounced Fifteen Beacon, for those who forgot their Roman numerals), the new sign of the youthful (and moneyed) times. In the heart of the blue-blooded Beacon Hill neighborhood, XV Beacon is a forward-thinking hotel—and the first major “boutique” hotel in Boston—for those entrepreneurs to whom fashion, cutting edge design and technology are actual concerns.

There's a fax and three telephones in every room, and 24-hour room service for refugees from faraway time zones. In your bathroom, there's every sort of beauty product imaginable: not the Chanel creams that you would imagine in the dressing tables of Boston grand dames, but cheerfully luxe, animal friendly products for both sexes — buckwheat eye pillows, peppermint foot lotion, vegetable oil soaps, and even an aromatherapy jet lag package. But XV Beacon, despite its hipness, remains a Boston hotel. Call it snobbish New England with a twist. The restaurant, appropriately nameded The Federalist, serves up clam bakes and beef Wellington alongside its sauteed abalone. Its wine cellar of over thirty-one thousand bottles would please any old school palate. And the sixty dignified and private rooms give the hotel a feeling of a rather elite club. The building—original Beaux Arts, all cast iron and limestone—fits effortlessly into the la-di-dah old fashioned architecture of the neighborhood.

But nothing says Boston Modern more than the décor. Throughout is the coffee palette of old New England — silver, mocha, tan, cream. The original cast iron elevator takes you to your floor. The bedrooms are gentlemanly, outfitted in dark wood and velvet bedspreads, with four-poster canopy beds and fireplaces, adding a homely touch but fully functional (and welcome) when it's snowing. Nonetheless, it's not your mother's hotel (she'll be having tea across the street at the Four Seasons). The fireplaces are floating stainless steel, and the candlesticks on your coffee table are two feet tall.

While marble busts are usually forbidding, at the Beacon they are oversized and jammed into the most unusual spots, lending a playful touch. The same goes for the broken columns scattered about on the floor at The Federalist. XV Beacon is no hyper-modern industrial design fantasy. Rather its style is reminiscent of turn of the century surrealism, using familiar objects in an offbeat manner that's more René Magritte than Karim Rashid. Boston isn't ready for Barbarella sofas, nor should it ever be, as its old-fashioned Yankee aesthetic is integral to its charm. You don't love Boston for its edge, you love it for its history, and in some small part, you love it for its stodginess. Despite its stylishness, at this hotel, you'll still feel very much part of this bean town.

An Enchanting Weekend in Boston

By amartinez-fonts based in New York

Stayed September 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

The staff, the room, the location (as central as it gets). Did I mention the staff? I called ahead and asked them to book a table for two in a hip/ romantic restaurant. They did, and had the hotel car whisk us there for free and pick us up in the pouring rain after dinner. Loved the whole experience.

I Disliked

The lobby was being renovated when we were there, but that's not really a "dislike," just a fact.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
