The art’otels are perhaps more like auteur hotels—every detail created or curated by the hand of a single artist, resulting in a rather more unified vision than the typical committee-designed chain hotel, and an escape from uninspired hotel art to boot. In this case the auteur is the American artist Donald Sultan, whose close-up still-lifes teeter on the edge between realism and abstraction, a conceit that, beyond its artistic merits, makes for eye-catching interior design.

Located on the banks of the Danube, on the Buda side, the art’otel Budapest occupies four 18th-century houses and one new building, making for spectacular water views on one side, and a look at the Castle Hill from the other. Guest rooms are divided between the new and old buildings, and contrary to expectations, the newer ones are the smaller—though they compensate with views of the Danube. The historic houses have a bit more personality, with heavy old metal doors and separate showers.

The color scheme is a brilliant red and a metallic grey, a refreshing break from the prevailing cloud-white of less confident boutique hotels. And the Chelsea restaurant is something to behold, serving lighter foreigner-friendly Hungarian fare in a handsome dining room, with black-and-white checked floors and possibly the least cloying butterfly image we’ve ever seen, courtesy of Donald Sultan, of course. Book early, as this is one of Budapest’s top hotels—we’d like to say it’s a well-kept secret, but the word is out on this one.

Great views and a much improved breakfast

By aargyropoulos484237 based in Kifisia

Stayed January 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

We were upgraded to a room with view of the Danube and the Parliament, which was amazing. Past reviews of a rather mediocre breakfast are no longer valid; I would say that their breakfast buffet is really rich now. In general, the hotel offers great value for its pricing.

I Disliked

Nothing, really.

skip breakfast if you can!

By kcollins610795 based in Belfast

Stayed September 2008

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

Good size rooms.

I Disliked

Breakfast was a bit pathetic and not worth the extra 12 Euro per night personally I wouldn't recommend it. Wi-fi was also ridiculously priced. Most hotels include wi-fi as standard free of charge, not here.

Art'otel in Budapest

By jnewman605882 based in Los Angeles

Stayed September 2008

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

Location is very convenient; staff were very pleasant; rates were very reasonable

I Disliked

Biggest flaw in my stay was the persistent odor of cigarette smoke throughout the hallways and intermittently in the room; internet access was overpriced at something like EUR 20/day for full/broadband access; room was not made up until fairly late in the day on 2 of the 3 days during stay; the bed was one of those beds that you find at European hotels that isn't really a queen size bed but two twins slid next to each other, so that if you're sleeping with someone, you each wind up clinging to a narrow little duvet and one of you winds up stuck in the crevasse betweent the two twin mattresses

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
