Hotel Description

The plain, pale façade of the Art Hotel Novecento reflects the Vienna Secession style of the late 1890s — which, in the medieval center of Bologna, looks downright modern. Inside it’s another era: the idiosyncratically decorated rooms give off a 1930s Art Deco vibe, with geometric headboards, flattering mirrors, and soft sconces. To complicate matters further, the name refers to the site’s previous building, which was completed in the ninth century. As a city, Bologna prizes its culture and history; the hotel shares the same attitude, even if it makes for a slightly kaleidoscopic atmosphere.

The marble bathrooms, however, with their walk-in showers and built-in hair dryers, are very much in the now. So is the lobby, a study in clean lines and wood, meant to ease the transition from the bustling pedestrian area outside into the quiet atmosphere inside. And they certainly didn’t have soundproof glass and wi-fi in the ninth century.

The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but Bologna isn’t called “La Grassa” (the fat one) for nothing. Which is to say, restaurants proliferate nearby. At any rate, a cold breakfast comes with the room, and an aperitif of small snacks and generous pours is served each afternoon. Should you eat too much, or start to lament the lack of a gym on site, you can borrow one of the hotel’s bicycles and ride around, maybe visiting the famous towers. For those who need even more exercise, you’re allowed up the Torre degli Asinelli. The tallest structure in town offers commanding views if you’re willing to pay the (steep) fee: close to 500 stairs.
