The brick-lined streets near Savannah’s Forsyth Park are home to an amusingly large number of bed-and-breakfasts — quite understandable when you consider that it’s these rows of Queen Anne and Italianate mansions that made this neighborhood a byword for laid-back Southern charm for more than a century. And while there’s no shortage of wraparound porches and open-armed hospitality in this neck of the woods, the locally sourced decadence of the cuisine at the Azalea Inn & Gardens makes it, in particular, a destination for comfort-food aficionados.
Of course, before you get to the breakfast you’ll have to spend the night. Not that you’ll mind. Huntingdon Garden served as the mansion’s original master bedroom, and traces of its stately origins abound, from the eleven-foot ceilings to the imposing four-poster bed. While modern comforts such as iPod docks and gas fireplaces keep you from feeling like you’ve stepped directly into 1885, the overall effect is one of deep Southern magic brought to life in the present day. Many of the guest rooms are tailor-made for couples on a romantic getaway, but there’s also a family-friendly two-bedroom cottage just across the patio.
Breakfast kicks off at seven o’clock every morning, and innkeepers Teresa and Michael Jacobson have gone to great lengths to create hearty southern fare using local ingredients, some of which come from the on-site garden. The soufflés, buttermilk pancakes, grits, scones, and sweet potato biscuits are just part of a cornucopia of delights that may very well tide you over until dinner. And if you’re still craving more, the hotel is mere blocks from Savannah’s most intriguing restaurants and cafés.
Please note: Azalea Inn & Gardens has a 2-night minimum on weekends around holidays and special events, and does not allow children under the age of 14.
