In the broadest strokes, Mallorca’s hotels can be divided between two categories: those in Palma, the island’s ancient capital, and those set way out in the hills and on the far-flung beaches. Built into the iconic Moorish seawall at the edge of Palma de Mallorca’s old town, Boutique Hotel Calatrava is very much in the Palma camp. Look closely and you can probably spot it on a postcard or two at a nearby shop. A few years ago this would have been a hindrance, but Palma de Mallorca has been rediscovered, its winding streets and melange of historic architecture attracting a new generation of travelers. Spend some time at a hotel like Calatrava — or for that matter shopping at a local boutique, or eating by the sea at one of the town’s irresistible tapas bars — and you’ll wonder how this gorgeous medieval city ever could have fallen out of favor. No matter; it’s back.

Given the iconic Palma setting, however, what’s remarkable is that this beautifully refurbished 19th-century mansion — all sunlight, sea breezes and soft, luxury-hotel surfaces — feels so much like a place apart. Much of the serenity owes to the hotel’s position in a leafy little park just off the Bay of Palma, but just as important is the low-key, long-mornings and lazy-afternoons atmosphere of the place. It’s an easy stroll to the sights in town, but the appeal of Hotel Calatrava is as much about taking it easy as it is about being near the center of the action.

Ten of the sixteen rooms come with sea views, and it must be said: to travel all the way to the Balearic Islands, stay in a hotel at the edge of the water, and not book a room with a sea view would be a mistake. Watery views or not, the rooms are as comfortable as can be — a mix of antique details like wooden-beam ceilings, contemporary Spanish furnishings, and modern musts like king beds, spacious closets and bathrooms that are big and bright. But still, none of it quite matches the dreaminess of sitting on your balcony at sunset, wine glass in hand.

For such a small hotel, the amount of space beyond the guest rooms — and enticing space, at that — comes as something of a surprise. There’s a tranquil spa downstairs and a bistro serving light Mediterranean fare, and best of all a sunny rooftop terrace where breakfast is served. The food is nothing over-the-top, but with views like these, some salty sea breezes and a healthy dappling of sunshine to round things out, one could hardly want for more.
