On the island of Hydra, closed to all automobiles (but not donkeys) a one-time sponge factory dating to 1860 has been renovated and converted into the island’s best hotel, Bratsera. Here you’re a short walk up the hill from the harbor, in a stone villa surrounding a central pool, a courtyard planted with cypress trees and an open-air restaurant. All of Hydra is quiet and collegial, owing to its small size and pedestrian-only status — Bratsera, though, is even more so.

The guest rooms, though only a few years old, are as traditional as can be, with antique dressers, four-poster beds and exposed beams. The best rooms have small terraces or balconies, and all have working antique windows to let in the Mediterranean sun and the sea breeze.

Dinner is served by the poolside, and the restaurant, formerly known as the English-themed Bill’s Bar, is one of the finest in town, serving traditional seafood-heavy fare in an antique dining room or, weather permitting, out in the courtyard by the pool. There’s nothing over-the-top about this place, surrounded by quiet pedestrian streets and spectacular views — though it’s Hydra’s finest, it’s positively subtle compared to some of Greece’s opulent palace hotels.
