What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

It says something about the challenge of high-end hospitality that the Buddha Bar group managed to open more than a half-dozen bars and restaurants — and even a hotel in Prague — before cutting the ribbon on their flagship Parisian boutique hotel. But cut the ribbon they did, and as of 2013 there’s a place in Paris where you can partake in the Buddha Bar’s trademark chilled-out Orientalism long past closing time.

The interiors certainly don’t shy away from pursuing the Far East theme to its logical conclusion — the rooms and suites are identifiably Parisian, but only just, and only if you pay particular attention to the chairs and the subtler architectural details of this 17th-century building. Otherwise it’s all carved Japanese-style headboards, Chinese lanterns, a pervasive dragon motif, and red and gold for miles in every direction, a level of fantasy that’s admirable for its total commitment.

Obviously they’re not going to stop there. Le Vraymonde serves an inventive pan-global cuisine under the direction of chef Rougui Dia, while Le Qu4tre is more or less precisely the sort of chic private lounge you’d expect from the Buddha Bar’s proprietors. There’s a chance that the slightly cultish pleasure-palace vibe will be a bit puzzling to the uninitiated — though now that we’ve written the words, we’ll admit that it’s hard to imagine anything more appealing in a Parisian boutique hotel than a slightly cultish pleasure-palace vibe.
