Hotel Description

Like San Francisco itself, Carriage Inn has something of a split personality. On the one hand, it’s a slightly off-color Victorian funhouse–style homage to San Francisco’s subversives and eccentrics, each sunny room dedicated to a local figure who’s as likely to be shady as luminary. On the other, it’s an efficient former Best Western that satisfies business travelers attracted, in part, by the hotel’s proximity to the Moscone Convention Center and the SOMA neighborhood’s many tech offices. It’s hard to imagine there’s another hotel on the planet with a Cheech Marin-themed room, for example, let alone one where guests are quite so likely to overlook the typewritten sheet of Marin’s pot-smoking wisdom in their rush to connect to the free wi-fi.

For convenience, the location is hard to beat. Union Square and most of the city’s mainstream retailers are just a few blocks away, as are the Civic Center BART (subway) station, the cable car line to Fisherman’s Wharf, and a street car that takes you to the Embarcadero’s Ferry Building Marketplace or the Giants’ baseball stadium. Some of the city’s best recent-vintage restaurants, bars and clubs can also be found in the neighborhood, a former industrial area that’s been washed over by several distinct waves of gentrification.

In other ways, however, the location is perhaps best suited to adventurous types. This neighborhood is genuinely up-and-coming, but it hasn’t arrived yet. If you want a hotel from which you can take a leisurely evening stroll without a care in the world, we suggest you shake a few more coins from the piggy bank and focus your search on some point nearer the top of Nob Hill. If you’re comfortable with a neighborhood that has some rough edges, however, the rewards are plenty.

Inside, those rough edges have been smoothed out considerably. The rooms are infused with a tasteful eclecticism, a distinct San Francisco–Victorian flavor — ornately patterned carpets and walls, antique furnishings, oversized bay windows. There's a cozy, ever-present warmth about the spaces, though present-day design flourishes keep it from feeling outdated. The design is further evidence that an updated version of the Victorian aesthetic is having something of a moment — and where better for a well-polished, post-modern curiosity cabinet than San Francisco.
