Hotel Description

It takes a certain if-you-build-it confidence to convert a 1500-year-old monastery into an über-minimalist six-room hotel and destination restaurant — and that stands true even if you’ve got a couple of Michelin stars to your name, as the chef behind Casadonna Reale does. To open a place like this in Abruzzo, though — that’s beyond confident; it’s making a statement. This is a region that, despite its rugged, mountainous beauty and its proximity to Rome, is little visited, at least by the standards of Italian tourism. All the better for those willing to explore its three outstanding national parks and stay in towns like Castel di Sangro, where the stony, sparsely populated green hills roll quietly toward the river below.

Bold as it is, there’s a logic to the way the whitewashed exteriors of the hillside monastery lead to the sunny, nearly all-white rooms within. The rooms are austere, but they’re full of sunlight as well, with luxurious touches like enormous, egg-shaped tubs in the bedrooms and walk-in showers in the modern black and white bathrooms.

The bright white monochrome continues into the restaurant, which makes the vibrant, artfully presented food that much more of a shock to the eye. The dishes, savory or sweet, are all visual confections, but underlying the chef’s flights of fancy are the traditional flavors and ingredients of the region. Abruzzo might not be the first place you’d expect to find a place like Casadonna Reale, but anywhere else it wouldn’t be the same.

How to get there:

Castel di Sangro Train Station is 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Casadonna Reale. Rome Fiumicino is the closest airport (93 miles/150 kilometers) and transfers can be arranged at the cost of 250€ each way.
