It’s a bit like finding out that your best friend’s girlfriend has a sister. Not just any sister, but a sister who’s a little younger, maybe even a bit prettier, and who, with 76 rooms rather than 9 — okay, perhaps there the analogy breaks down. The point is, the owners of the Hotel Claska, the coolest hotel in Tokyo (and thus, by extension, the world) have opened a new hotel: the Dojima.

Claska is a perfect fit for Tokyo, a den of envelope-pushing hipness in a city that’s obsessed with cool. Osaka is a less obvious choice for this kind of franchise, but if anything, the effect is just heightened, set as it is against the backdrop of Japan’s picturesque and ultra-historic second city — and the Dojima itself is no Claska clone, but a more stately and tranquil hotel, tuned to Osaka’s unique aesthetic.

Space is at less of a premium here, allowing the Dojima to spread out a bit — the practical effect of which is that it’s actually possible to get a reservation. The rooms are the very picture of the modern Japanese boutique, sedate in design and flawless in execution. Equally important, however, is the crowd that gathers in the Dojima’s common areas: guests line up for grill seating at Hanadori, the Japanese steakhouse, and at the Diner, a casual French/Italian restaurant. Like Claska, the Dojima incorporates an outpost of the Hacknet bookstore, whose shelves are stocked with thousands of rare and out-of-print art and design books.

Bottom line: if you’re passing through Osaka, it’d be a shame to stay somewhere else — and if you’re not passing through Osaka, then add the Dojima to the reasons why maybe you should be.
