From the breezy vantage point of a sofa on one of the Emelisse Hotel’s sunny terraces, gazing at an unobstructed view of the Ionian Sea, it may seem forehead-slappingly obvious that a hotel in a place like this can afford to get out of the way and let the setting do the work. And indeed, though the Emelisse is not exactly short on comforts, from its six gorgeous pools to its excellent restaurants and bars, it never obscures its greatest asset: a location on a secluded stretch of bayside coast on one of the most paradisiacal islands in Greece.
The emphasis in the rooms is on tranquility, with unobtrusive teak furniture and earth tone décor against that bright, watery blue thing on the other side of the windows. Every room has a terrace or balcony and a semi-private pool shared by a limited number of neighboring rooms. Upgrade from the standard Executive room to a two-floor Maisonette and both the space and the views get larger. After that it’s all suites, with two full bedrooms and two bathrooms in all but the Junior suites, which have a separate sitting room that can convert into a single bedroom.
By day the hotel is awash, inside and out, in that famous Mediterranean light — and the lighting at night might be even better. While nightfall on other coastal stretches of the Greek Isles often brings out strobes and brightly colored LEDs, at the Emelisse it’s all candle- and lamplight. It gives the whole place a quiet, romantic glow, a flattering look for a hotel that need not hog a spotlight.
Please note: Emelisse Hotel is open seasonally, April through October.
How to get there:
From the airport exit, follow the road uphill for 0.5km to the T-junction. Turn left, towards Argostoli. This road will take you through the village of Minies and past the White Rocks Hotel, then though the tourist resort of Lassi, which is lined with tavernas and mini-markets.
Follow the hill up out of Lassi. At the top of the hill after you round a bend, take the right turn sign-posted Skala and Poros, with a sign for AVIN Petrol on the corner – take care as there is a road emerging just before this turning. Follow this new road to the end (approx 1.5km) where there is a T-junction with another AVIN petrol station on the left. Turn left and continue to the next junction where the road forks round a grass-covered traffic island. Take the RIGHT fork.
Follow this road passing the sports stadium on your left. You will see a sign indicating that you are leaving Argostoli (it has a red line through the name) and a further 400 metres along, move into the filter lane for the left turn at the round-a-bout signposted for Sami, Lixouri & Fiskardo). Take this left turn. BEWARE: Traffic approaching from the right has right of way
You are now travelling around the Koutavos Lagoon. Follow this road passing a small cement works on the left. You will then reach a small set of traffic lights just before the brow of the hill. There are two right hand turns on the brow of a hill – please take care here. Continue ahead and follow the road round to the right. You will shortly pass the British and Greek Cemeteries on your right, immediately after these the road forks. Bear left, following the sign to Fiscardo.
Follow the coastal road, passing through the village of Farsa. Continue along this road and you will then pass the turning for Lixouri on the left. Go straight on. Continue to follow this road which follows the spectacular coastline. You will then come to a junction (Divarata) with Agia Efimia and Sami signposted straight ahead and Myrtos Beach signposted left – turn left and follow the road straight on now for several kilometers.
Continue along the coast road past the turn off for Assos and through several small villages including Vassilikades (where there is a petrol station), Manganos and Antipata Erissou.
From Antipata, proceed down the hill towards Fiskardo.
As you near the village, take the left turn sign posted for the Emplysi Beach / Emelisse Hotel, just after Panorama Taverna on your left. As you approach the hotel, follow the signs to the car park, passing a No Entry / Pedestrians only sign.
Drive up to the barrier and dial 9 on the phone to contact reception. They will give you the code to raise the barrier and will send a porter will come to meet you.
