What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

If you’ve ever stayed at a Fairmont, and if you’re at all familiar with Boston’s prevailing style of traditionalist New England luxury, then you already know what’s coming; there are some worthy particulars and some pleasant surprises to describe (more on those below), but all told, Fairmont Battery Wharf is everything the name implies — tasteful high-end comforts, an urban waterfront location, highly competent service, a sunny palette of creams and golds, plus enough marble and Egyptian cotton to remind you that “Zen” is not the only form of relaxation.

But about those worthy particulars. The hotel occupies four adjacent buildings on Boston Harbor, each of them jutting out into the water like a big, docked passenger liner. The views, you’ll be unsurprised to learn, skew toward the watery end of the spectrum. In the better rooms, you might well feel like you’re floating above the harbor, and the best way to get here from Logan Airport is by water taxi. (There’s a dedicated service to the hotel.) We’d say it’s prime real estate, but really it’s four pieces of prime real estate, all lined up alongside each other, framed by the water below and the urban skyline above.

The North End, Boston’s old Italian neighborhood, is essentially out the back door, while the harbor-walk, a popular pedestrian and biking path, is out the front. The financial district, Freedom Trail and Faneuil Hall are all an easy walk from the hotel, making the location a good one for both business and leisure.

Fairmont’s tendency is toward a classic, perhaps even old-fashioned form of hospitality — you may not be dazzled to find speakerphone-capable cordless telephones on the list of amenities, but windows that actually open to let in the sea air qualify these days as a pleasant surprise. Ultimately, the classic style works because it never crosses over into stuffiness. The glassy, contemporary wavelike structures that house the hotel, the freshness of the paint and spaciousness and sunniness of the rooms, the enormous modern spa, the business facilities and the modern waterside restaurants all work to balance things out. Fairmont Battery Wharf may not be a revolution in the global hotel scene, but it’s very much on its game — and for a Fairmont to live up to its reputation, to execute a hotel experience as well attuned to its place as this one is, that’s no small thing.
