In the age of cheap and easy jet travel Santa Barbara is too often overlooked. Fifty years ago the Biltmore played host to all manner of Hollywood royalty. These days not only are the royalty more or less extinct, but their heirs could be in Mexico or the Caribbean in the time it takes to drive ninety miles up the coast. So it falls to the rest of us to take their place — which isn’t exactly going to be a hardship, considering this place, officially the punctuation-dodging Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, is every bit as spectacular an escape as it was back in Garbo’s day.
Chalk it up two two factors in more or less equal measure. First is the place itself, a Twenties-era Spanish Colonial villa surrounded by lush gardens — a setting which, when it comes to old-school California charm, knocks seven shades out of the average West Coast luxury hotel. Second is the name on the stationery. If the Four Seasons label stands for anything, it’s the twin strengths of very traditional luxury and classically professional hospitality. The rooms and cottages, modern electronics aside, look as they might have in the Thirties, all antique woodwork, rich fabrics and tiled bathrooms. All just ninety miles — and about ninety years, give or take — from present-day LA.
How to get there: The Biltmore Santa Barbara is approximately a 20 minute drive from Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) and 2 hours from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
