What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

At this point, if you’re going to be spending any time in California, you’re going to get acquainted with Joie de Vivre. And it just so happens that what is, in 2014, their newest hotel, the Galleria Park Hotel, also happens to be their most historic. On this site, up until the great earthquake and fire of 1906, stood the Occidental Hotel and the Lick House, the city’s storied twin grand dames. More recently it was the slightly less untenably named Hotel Sutter — but after a very thorough renovation, the Galleria Park again has what it takes to appeal to San Francisco’s extremely choosy travelers.

The location could scarcely be more central, splitting the difference between Union Square and the Financial District, and the hotel, quite sensibly, seems equally pitched towards both working and playing crowds — the look is stylish enough to hold any leisure traveler’s interest, and classically elegant enough to sustain a suitably serious tone for business. And in a city that’s recently been accused of cashing in its character in exchange for economic gains, it’s a pleasure to see the Galleria Park holding so fast to its Art Deco and Art Nouveau heritage.

As for the details, the luxury-boutique must-haves are all accounted for, from Frette linens and rain showers to HD televisions and in-room internet service that’s said to be San Francisco’s fastest (no mean feat, obviously). There’s also a bit of a surprise in the form of a secret garden terrace with outdoor seating and a walking track. What’s missing is all the hullaballoo of an Occidental- or Lick House–style grand hotel, as the Galleria Park is more pied-à-terre than five-star circus — quite by design, of course, as this particular corner of San Francisco doesn’t exactly suffer from a shortage of bars and restaurants.
