We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

The Meatpacking District, perhaps the most hedonistic of all of Manhattan’s neighborhoods, is hardly short on statement-making, nightlife-oriented hotels. The neighborhood’s messier commercial past is all but extinct, the words “meat market” having taken on a less literal connotation for the crowds who teeter along the cobblestone streets these days. And yet even as more and more eye-catching hotels and their attendant nightlife scenes sprout up, the Gansevoort remains a perennial standout — its rooftop lounge an enduringly inviting place to clink cocktail glasses, its sweeping views of the Hudson as inspiring as ever.

Housed in a glass and metal tower, the hotel stands in contrast to the neighborhood’s predominantly low-rise industrial architecture. At thirteen stories it would be no more than a bump in the Midtown pavement; down here, though, the skyline is lower, and Hotel Gansevoort towers over most of its neighbors. You may even be able to peer mockingly down upon the star-studded rooftop of the members-only Soho House from the comfort of your room.

And quite a room it is. The ceilings are high, the windows are big and the views (have we mentioned?) are impressive. All the proper technology is accounted for as well, from expansive LCD screens to Curious Provisions boom-boxes that connect to your iDevices. But as well-designed as the rooms are, it’s the public spaces that truly impress, not least that rooftop with its 45-foot heated pool, its landscaped terraces and its cozy lounge, plus views from just about every nook. Meanwhile, for some sidewalk-altitude people-watching to complement the experience up above, there’s the Chester, the hotel’s indoor-outdoor American brasserie.

A neighborhood like the Meatpacking District lives and dies by its nightlife, and the same is true to some extent of the Gansevoort itself. After dark the neighborhood draws revelers from all over the city, and the hotel’s Provocateur nightclub is a hot ticket itself. There’s no shortage of entertainment; but mercifully for those in search of a quiet night’s sleep, the rooms are sufficiently high above it all to afford a measure of peace.
