Hotel Description

In a city where hotels tend toward the extremes — in comfort, cost, convenience, any number of measures, really — Paris’s Hôtel Verneuil is the rare hotel that lands in the elusive goldilocks zone: mid-range, centrally located, comfortable but not lethargy-inducing, stylish without getting silly about it.

Unless you’ve got some obscure agenda pulling you out to the margins of town, the location truly couldn’t be better. Hôtel Verneuil occupies a 17th-century townhouse on rue de Verneuil, a narrow little street in Saint-Germain, just two blocks off the Seine. An easy and scenic walk takes you across the river to the Louvre (tell the concierge you’re going and they’ll give you a pass so you can skip the lines) and the Arc de Triomphe. Shoppers after the most current wares can easily make their way to Le Bon Marché, which lives up to its name in at least one sense, or pay a visit to the capital-h Houses of Diór, Hermés and plenty of others, while those after something older will find themselves amidst the finest antique shops in the city. And right out the door is a true-to-imagination Parisian streetscape, with easily a week’s worth of outstanding old cafés and bistros and brasseries crowding the sidewalks. Even the ghosts that haunt the block are as good as they come, and quintessentially Left Bank; Serge Gainsbourg’s old house is across the street, and James Baldwin spent some time living in the hotel itself, back when Verneuil was a substantially more modest operation.

Where Baldwin battled temperamental plumbing, there are now marble bathrooms in each of the 26 accommodations. The character of the 17th-century structure more than peeks through — not least in the exposed wood timbers in many of the ceilings — but, after a thorough renovation in 2012, the level of comfort is decidedly current. Rooms range in size from teeny-tiny to quite-decent-for-Paris, but they’re full of warmth and character, with deft lighting and a smattering of books or objets d’art, plus LED screens nearly as big as some of the walls. There’s no restaurant, just a vaulted stone cellar where breakfast is served and a cozy lobby for hanging out with a pre-dinner drink. In both cases, the hotel is just a starting point, an excellent place to prepare yourself for all that waits outside.
