What I liked:

Frangos is located in the heart of Daylesford on Vincent Street. It has a slightly rustic/ boudoir feel and each room is individually styled. The guest reading room was fantastic, and the breakfast very good. Overall, great facilities (including Jimmy's Bar). If you like your hotels to have character, rather than splash out and stay at the Lake House, I'd suggest staying in the Terrace Room at Frangos (and save your cash for the tasting menu at the Lake House restaurant - which is excellent).

What the hotel could do better:

Nothing, had a wonderful stay!

Hotel Description

For quite a lot of us Melbourne is a getaway in and of itself. But for Melburnians themselves, the getaway is Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, a pair of little resort towns in the hills an hour’s drive to the north and west of the city. And there’s no rule that says Melburnians have to have all the fun. For travelers of any extraction, a properly detailed antipodean grand tour would necessarily involve a stop in Daylesford, and a stay at Hotel Frangos.

You might expect something a bit provincial, or old-fashioned, or both. You’d be wrong. Hotel Frangos is perfectly cosmopolitan, remarkably stylish, and frankly much better than it needs to be, given that it’s more or less the only game in town, as far as boutique-hotel fans are concerned. This means adventurous (yet sure-handed) interior design, first-rate comforts, a spa just up the road, and not just one fine restaurant, but two or three, depending on your precise definition — the high-end Frangos & Frangos, the more casual Cafe KouKla, and Jimmy’s Bar, open Thursday through Sunday.

All in all it’s a welcome surprise seeing the art of boutique hospitality practiced at such a high level in the sort of place that could get by with a few bed and breakfasts and a stodgy old resort hotel. If we’re spilling a well-kept secret, our apologies — one imagines Victorians might prefer to have kept this one to themselves.

How to get there:

Hotel Frangos is located in Daylesford, about a 90-minute drive northwest of Melbourne. For further information, please email CustomerService@TabletHotels.com.
