It’s right there in the name, so you can’t say you weren’t warned. But if size were all that mattered, most hotels in Paris — to say nothing of New York — would be out of business. The Hôtel Le Petit Paris relies on character to compensate for its small footprint, and character is something it’s got in abundance.
The general concept is roughly equal parts Latin-Quarter funkiness and contemporary luxury-boutique gloss. Rooms vary in style according to several themes: represented are the Twenties and the Seventies as well as the mediaeval period and the obligatory Louis XV. None of these is a slavish reconstruction though — at Le Petit the history is mixed with a generous helping of contemporary flavor. And while they’re never what you’d call oversized, these little rooms make the most of their space — a little visual stimulation goes a long way.
If you’re lucky you’ll have a private terrace, or at least a view of the city’s rooftops. Windows are triple-glazed to shut out the street noise, and while you won’t find solid-gold bathroom taps or other signs of opulence, all the basic comforts are at hand. The exception being, as is the Parisian style, a restaurant — this, of course, is simply the city’s hoteliers subtly sending the message that if you’re looking to dine in, then you’re in danger, when it comes to Paris, of entirely missing the point.
