We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

Hotel Majestic is one of Rome’s grand old luxury hotels, and just to step into its gleaming marble lobby is to know that the opulence that was once synonymous with high-end hospitality remains as persuasive as ever.

Designed in 1889 by the foremost architect of its day, the distinctive neoclassical building was the first hotel on Via Veneto. The curving, tree-lined street, home to any number of cafés and restaurants, and famous for its leather and jewelry shops, is one of the most charming in Rome. It’s also within easy walking distance of many of the major attractions, including the Borghese Gallery and the Spanish Steps, and a short trip from the fashion houses of Via Condotti.

As at many of the old European grand dames, a room upgrade goes a long way here. Not that the entry-level rooms are in any way inadequate. They’re quiet and sunny, fitted with marble bathrooms, eye-catching white-lacquered furniture and traditional crown moulding. But the truth is that the suites do a better job living up to the scale and the opulence of the public spaces. When you pull your champagne from its dewy silver bucket and open it up, you want that cork to have some room to fly.

Outside the room, all the trappings of an old-school luxury hotel experience are at hand. At the restaurant, the acclaimed local chef Massimo Riccioli does innovative takes on Italian seafood dishes and reinvented Roman classics, with an emphasis on sustainable local ingredients. It’s modern food served in an ornate, gleamingly white dining room, with a terrace tucked away off of Via Veneto. A pair of bars, the Majestic and the Verdi Lounge, round out the dining and drinking options, the latter featuring an intricate frescoed ceiling. And the staff — from the concierges to the bellmen — embody discreet, attentive service of a sort that’s harder and harder to find, even in Rome.
