We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

The Hotel Sacher Salzburg was born the Hotel D'Autriche in 1866, and remains to this day one of Salzburg's grandest hotels, occupying a privileged position along the banks of the Salzach river. And even today it's better known under another name — the Österreichischer Hof, or, mercifully, the ÖH for short.

Only since 1988 has it come under the umbrella of the Gürtler family, owners of the Hotel Sacher Wien and makers of the storied Original Sacher-Torte, the world-famous chocolate cake. Salzburg is a city rich with history, with Mozart among its gifts to the world — so the ÖH is understandably a traditional place, heavy with antique furniture and paintings. The staff come dressed in 19th-century uniforms and behave accordingly, offering old-fashioned efficient service fit for royals and aristocrats.

Rooms are no less elegant, stocked with reproductions and authentic antiques, and overlooking either the river or the Old Town and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. All have the requisite marble bathrooms and many come with private balconies from which to enjoy the views.

Dining is, naturally, one of the Österreichischer Hof's strong points. The Zirbelzimmer restaurant (awarded with 1 toque) is old-fashioned fine dining, Austrian style, beneath an historic paneled ceiling, and there are a number of less formal venues as well, from the piano bar to the Café Sacher Salzburg, whose terrace overlooks the river. And don't forget about the Sacher-Torte — it would be a waste to come this far and neglect to visit the Sacher Confiserie, offering a full range of Sacher pastries and confections.
