We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

Suddenly Prague is awash in cool, inexpensive boutique hotels. What sets Hotel Unic apart is that it’s both a little bit cooler and a little bit less expensive than most. The rooms start out small but functional, and the designers’ contagious sense of whimsy sets the mood. Splashes of orange abound, spindly modern light fixtures hang from the ceilings, bright contemporary artworks adorn the walls, and somehow they’ve even managed to make the occasional bit of floral pattern upholstery look new again. All this for under a hundred euros a night in the heart of Prague’s historic city center, with the major sights (the Prasna Brana, the Old Town Square) within easy walking range.

There’s something to be said, by the way, for staying in a decidedly contemporary boutique hotel in such ancient surroundings. The pleasures of Prague’s medieval streets and spires are well known, and to spend the day strolling the old quarter is indeed a unique pleasure — but when your legs are sore and you just want to kick back in bed, it’s nice to come back to the 21st century. The rooms are full of character to be sure, but they're also built for comfort, with an abundance of cheery blonde wood and natural light. Throw in a casually ambitious modern restaurant, serving well-executed fusion cuisine in an airy, warmly lit dining room, and the hotel becomes more than merely a base from which to make excursions.

Though the clientele is primarily one that’s got more taste than money, there’s value at the highest end of the hotel’s guest rooms as well. For what you’d spend on the smallest room at the fancier places in town, here you can have a two-bedroom, two-bathroom, fourteen-hundred-square-foot suite with style and comfort to spare. There won’t be anyone on call to shine your shoes or coif your hair, but really, who cares?
