We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

A new InterContinental sounds at first like a contradiction in terms — this is a group that specializes in grand hotels, massive monumental century-old hotels. So the InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau is definitely a departure. Not only in terms of scale — just 55 rooms — but in style and concept as well.

It’s not a palace but a mansion and two neighboring buildings, joined together into something a bit more intimate than a typical Parisian luxury hotel. And the interiors avoid the classical style you may be expecting, opting instead for a contemporary look courtesy of Bruno Borrione, formerly a Philippe Starck protegé and a very competent designer in his own right.

If you want to see how modern style and classic luxury can comfortably coexist, this is a fine exhibit. The furnishings are design classics by the likes of Le Corbusier and Isamu Noguchi, mixed in with the occasional well-chosen antique piece. And the nuts and bolts of the place are top-quality as well, from the bathroom fixtures to the Egyptian cotton sheets.

While it may lack the panoramic views on offer at some of the grand hotels, the top floors look out over the city’s rooftops, with the occasional cheeky little peek at the Arc de Triomphe or the Eiffel Tower. And rather than a big handful of bars and restaurants there’s the all-in-one Le M64, with an open show kitchen and a clubby lounge. This might be the beginning of something new: the introduction of the grand boutique.
