What is this?

We select, you rate. Scores are on a 20-point scale, and they're assigned by our members who actually stayed there. If a hotel's rating falls below 16, it's gone — so your post-stay review is actually our most important quality-control tool. Thanks for that.

Visitors have been asking us about Brooklyn hotels for ages, and we’re just happy to finally have some answers. Williamsburg feels like slightly old news to New Yorkers, having been in the ascendancy for well over a decade, time for several cycles of backlash and resurgence. But for boutique hotels, it’s still early days on the far side of the East River. Soon there’ll be too many to name, but there’ll always be a place for the pioneers — King & Grove Williamsburg among them.

You can see why it took a while. In a neighborhood as authenticity-obsessed as Williamsburg, one aesthetic misstep could prove fatal. No such mistakes have been made here — designer Heather Maloney, a Schrager alum, finds just the right blend of funky finishes and subtle refinement. It’s a design hotel in the sense that it’s clearly been designed by someone with an accomplished eye, but it studiously avoids anything that hints at pretentiousness. Though the rooms do boast some suitably high-end comforts — Frette linens, marble baths — approachability is the name of the game.

Nowhere is this more true than in the public spaces. The Elm is a stylish restaurant that builds on French foundations with global influences, while Upper Elm, the rooftop lounge, affords unmissable views the Manhattan skyline. On top of that there’s King & Grove’s ace in the hole: an outdoor salt water pool where guests mingle with those locals fortunate enough to score day passes — something that’s not exactly common in New York hotels, especially on this side of the river.

How to get there:

King & Grove Williamsburg is a quick 6-block walk from the Bedford Avenue subway stop, which is less than 10 minutes on the L train from Union Square in Manhattan.
